Papers

Each speaker will have 30 minutes, up to 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. After each presentation there will be a five-minute interval to set up for the next speaker and to enable change of sessions.

The papers are organised in the following sessions: Memory and Fiction; Textuality and Manuscript Transmission; Oral Tradition; Genre and Concepts of History; Myth and Reality; The Christianisation of Denmark and Eastern Scandinavia; The Use of Sagas and Eddas in the 21st Century; and Open session.

There will be between two and four papers in each session.

Each session will have a chair person.

All lecture rooms are equipped with computers (PC, Windows) and overhead projectors (both kinds). Furthermore, there are microphones in the three largest rooms.

Powerpoint presentations

Please save your presentation to a USB-stick and take the usual Powerpoint precautions:

  • Avoid flashy special effects
  • Make sure to convert all images to a cross-platform readable format (i.e. jpg).
  • Only use standard fonts. For longer paragraphs with non-standard characters, we strongly recommend you to include your text as an image in your Powerpoint presentation
  • Along with your presentation, store all your image files separately on the USB-stick
  • Use the coffee or lunch break before your presentation to test your Powerpoint file

Posters

Posters are a new presentation form at the International Saga Conferences. Posters can be presented by individual scholars (i.e. PhD students, postdocs and senior scholars), as well as research groups. For research groups, a designated individual must be responsible for the poster presentation. 16 individual scholars and research groups have signed up for a poster presentation. Please see the title of the individual poster presentations in the online version of the Preprint Publication.

The dimensions of the poster board are 150 cm wide x 120 cm high; the size of the poster should be limited to the dimensions of the poster board. Poster presentations are scheduled for Thursday the 9th of August (between 14.30 and 16.10) in the Foyer at the Auditoriums at Theology.

Those responsible for the poster presentations can set their posters up from Monday the 6th of August after lunch, and they are responsible for taking down posters no later than Friday the 10th of August. Pins are available in the Information desk.

Thematic sessions

Thematic sessions are individually planned sessions, which consists of individual papers. There are three thematic sessions during the conference, please see the title of papers in the thematic sessions in the online version of the Preprint Publication.

Preprint Publication

There is a new format of the Preprint Publication. The two-page/five-page format differs from the Preprint Publication as these have otherwise been practiced at the International Saga Conferences. The new format is chosen for the following reasons, 1) the uncertain bibliographic status of the Preprint Publication in their previous format, 2) the uncertain relation between oral presentation and written paper in their previous format, 3) the tendency that the saga conferences grow, which – if the previous format was kept – would imply a considerable number of volumes. With the new format, shortening the length of each written contribution, the Preprint Publication is considered to be a valuable tool to be used during the conference, having the main function of directing audiences in deciding which papers/posters to attend.

The official languages of the 15th International Saga Conference are English, German, French, Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish.
